My wife wanted to remodel our office. I tore out the closet to make a
sitting area, sold our "L" shaped desk and put in wood floors,
crown molding and plantation shutters. Now we needed a new desk but
couldn't decide what we wanted. She saw a picture of a computer armoire that she wanted
and asked me if I could build it. I told her I could so I found the
dimensions of the cabinet on the net. The dimensions wouldn't fit our
needs so I made my own plans to accommodate our home office. I knew the
total width I could have and height and then started with the file drawers as
those had to be an exact fit to accommodate hanging files. Everything
after that is based on the rest of the dimensions that I had left to work
with.
The cabinet is built in 4 pieces. Each side cabinet is an individual
piece, then the main part is in 2 pieces. From the desk part down is 1
piece, then the upper is another piece. It had to be this way to get it
into our room and my goal was to make it look like only 3 pieces. The
side cabinets slide into the main section and the crown molding must
"slide" into each other with a fit that makes it look like it is
glued...talk about a pain!!! There is a slide-out desk that comes out
to give more writing room. All hardware came from http://www.rockler.com.
Drawer slides are all ball bearing slides. I have recessed lights in
the top of each piece.
I built this straight from my head with only a picture to go by, but had
moral support from my friends at http://forums.woodnet.net
.(They would be proud as my mission was to have no "metal". My friends have asked me to build others, but I told my wife that 1 was
enough! Been there, done that...now on to other projects!
